The GCA- A New/Old Beginning…..the Future!

gca photoThe GCA has been an idea/cause that has been close to my heart from the very beginning.
When founder Glenn Robertson first talked to me about the idea back in Summer/Autumn 2011, I was thrilled and honoured at being asked to be involved, and was thrilled to help write the Technical and Tactical content of the curriculum. Most of all though, really excited about the idea in general  and how it could help goalkeeper development.

So when Glenn put out an ‘SOS’ this week for someone to take over the ‘day to day’ running of The GCA I was happy to oblige and offer to do it. As I have been involved from the beginning I feel I can keep it’s core values and purpose going and hopefully drive it forward with some of the original ideas and some new ones (more on that later).

About me
I’m currently the Full Time 1st team GK Coach at Newport County AFC in League 2 (My ‘day job’ as it were). I have held the position for two years now (first year was part time combining a part time academy GK coach position at Bristol City to add up to my full time work,  I went full time with Newport when promoted to the football league). I have previously been Academy Goalkeeper coach (And Temporary First team) at Cardiff City also. I have been coaching goalkeepers for 13/14 years now, the last 8 of which as my ‘full time’ job. I hold FAW ‘B’ Licence Goalkeeping and UEFA ‘B’Licence Outfield badges.
New/old ideas
First of all I want to keep The GCA as goalkeeping coaching education for ALL. No minimum requirement to attend our courses or access the website, simply a passion for more goalkeeping knowledge is enough!

I think a common mis-conception when we first launched was that we were trying to ‘compete’ with the national FA GK badges, that simply isn’t the case! I actively encourage goalkeepers/goalkeeper coaches to attend national FA GK badges (And the New UEFA ‘A’ Licence goalkeeping when it’s released) if they seek a career in the game (I had a good experience myself doing it through the FAW) then our own coach education can simply supplement/expand there knowledge further if they so wish. Or if you just simply want some goalkeeping knowledge then we can help too!

The main way I want to do this is ‘relaunch’ the original idea of coach education courses (like the two day launch course we conducted in summer 2012), I’m hoping to have these up and running by Summer 2015. In Addition to the conventional ‘Technical and Tactical’ course I am looking to get ‘Goalkeeping Specific’ courses in psychology, strength and conditioning, speed and agility, and Analysis. From there I would like to develop courses for working with age specific/ability goalkeepers (from grass routes U8 Gks right up to elite men/women pro GK’s). All with the help of not just myself but the ‘Education Champions’ we have recruited in the past and in the future. All are ‘experts’ in their given field!

I’m also looking to run via the members area of the website ‘Distance learning’ courses with video and presentations and receive the full GCA curriculum (like you would on the more conventional courses) via email. Also questions will be asked via email/Skype.

Key to all this though still is the ‘Share and Grow’ part on our website. More knowledge is better knowledge and anyone who joins up as a free member of The GCA has access to this and can also share there own sessions/drills! If you have a good session feel free to share it as it may work for someone else too!

This is key to our message is that ‘No way is the right way’. Everyone who has coached goalkeepers for many years has an idea of how they think is the best way to develop them and get the best performances (I know I do!!!!!). We think at The GCA though, you can constantly evolve YOUR best methods by looking at other peoples ideas and you might/might not learn something new to help your goalkeepers!

I have many other ideas in the pipeline and you will be he first to know via here when they are finalised!

For now Happy Goalkeeping!
